Enter at either pink granite portal and the tunnel curves gently downward, its single bore carrying cars, cyclists and the occasional pedestrian together — a rare arrangement Wikipedia's account notes is unusual among road tunnels anywhere. The gradient tips as steep as 1 in 36 as the road drops to 48 feet below the high-water mark of the Thames above. Cast iron segments line the tunnelled stretch between the two inner shafts, a reminder that this was engineered, not carved, through London clay. Where the original white glazed tiles once ran the length of the bore, the southern half now shows sprayed grey gunite instead, replaced in 2011. Overhead height and width restrictions are enforced by camera the whole way through, and a 20mph limit governs every vehicle that passes beneath the river.

Name Origin

From a formal Act to a familiar name

The crossing's name is straightforwardly geographic: it links Limehouse in Tower Hamlets, north of the Thames, to Rotherhithe in Southwark on the south bank, and it is the southern district that gave the tunnel its lasting name. That name was not quite fixed from the outset. The scheme was authorised by Parliament as the Thames Tunnel (Rotherhithe and Ratcliff) Act 1900, a title that named both riverside settlements the tunnel would connect. By the time construction finished and the crossing opened to the public in 1908, it had settled into the simpler, single name it carries today — Rotherhithe Tunnel — dropping the reference to Ratcliff even though the northern approach lies in Limehouse rather than Rotherhithe itself.

The tunnel is also known by its road designation, the A101, Wikipedia's entry records, though this numbered identity has never displaced the popular name tied to the south-bank district the crossing serves.

History

Displacement, engineering, and a tunnel built without a single death

Parliament's authorisation in 1900 set in motion a project on a scale the surrounding riverside communities had not seen before. Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice, engineer for the London County Council, designed the crossing, and construction ran from 1904 to 1908 under resident engineer Edward H. Tabor and contractors Price and Reeves, at a cost of around £1 million, Wikipedia's account states. At the time it was completed, the tunnel was said to be "the largest subaqueous tunnel in existence" — a claim Wikipedia's entry preserves from contemporary description of the project's scale.

The human cost of that scale fell heavily on the two riverside communities either end of the route. Construction displaced nearly 3,000 local residents, and in 1903 the London County Council responded by building new tenement blocks in Swan Lane (now Swan Road), Clarence Street and Albion Street in Rotherhithe, and Brightlingsea Buildings on Ropemaker's Field in Limehouse, to rehouse those cleared from the tunnel's path. Despite the scale and risk of subaqueous construction, extensive safety precautions meant no construction workers were killed on the project, according to Wikipedia's account. An early routing decision also shortened the finished tunnel: the approach was originally planned to begin before reaching the railway, but during construction the start point was moved north of the line, cutting 160 feet from the route.

The tunnel opened formally in 1908, with George, Prince of Wales — later King George V — and Richard Robinson, Chairman of the London County Council, presiding over the ceremony. The finished structure comprised a single bore 4,862 feet long, with the tunnelled section between its inner shafts measuring 3,689 feet and lined in cast iron. Four ventilation and access shafts served the route: Shaft 1 at the corner of Brunel Road and Canon Beck Road in Rotherhithe, housing ventilation fans and, from 1939, a floodgate protecting the nearby railway; Shaft 2 by the Rotherhithe Street Bascule Bridge; Shaft 3 in King Edward VII Memorial Park; and Shaft 4 at The Highway and Heckford Street, whose original redbrick circular building was demolished in 1967 to allow the road to be widened. Both portals, faced in pink granite, and the shaft buildings at 2 and 3 were given Grade II listing in 1983, with new roofs added to the latter pair in 2007.

A tunnel that has doubled as a film set

The tunnel's distinctive bore and portals have drawn film and television crews more than once. Beyond the 1951 chase sequence in Pool of London, one iteration of the opening titles for the 1970s TV series The Professionals featured footage of the tunnel, and the music video for The Specials' song "Ghost Town" was partially filmed there — a fitting backdrop, given the tunnel's slightly forbidding, echoing character. Recent Times

From horse traffic to average-speed cameras

Usage grew steadily and then dramatically over the twentieth century. Shortly after opening in 1908, around 2,600 vehicles a day — mostly horse-drawn — and 14,000 pedestrians used the tunnel, Wikipedia's account records. By 1955 vehicle numbers had quadrupled to 10,500 a day, and by 1997 they had tripled again to over 34,000. Horse-drawn vehicles were banned from the tunnel in 1952, and bus routes have come and gone: the 82 ran between Stepney East Station and Rotherhithe until withdrawn in 1968, the P14 began using the tunnel from 1988, and the 395 ran through it from 1999 until its withdrawal without replacement on 28 April 2006 owing to low passenger usage.

Transport for London took over ownership and maintenance of the tunnel in 2001, and has since enforced strict limits: vehicles over 2 metres in height or width, or over 2 tonnes maximum authorised mass, are banned outright, with 75,387 violations issued in just the first eight months of 2021 alone, generating more than £5 million in revenue. A 20mph limit is enforced by average speed cameras, following a 2003 survey that rated the tunnel the tenth most dangerous in Europe. In 2011 the southern half's original glazed tiling was stripped out and replaced with sprayed gunite.

Today

Still shared, still busy, still restricted

The Rotherhithe Tunnel remains, as Wikipedia's account describes it, a rare surviving example of a road tunnel where cars, pedestrians and cyclists share a single bore. Pedestrian numbers have fallen away almost entirely, to around 20 people a day, while between 150 and 200 cyclists still make the crossing daily. Vehicles pass over the platforms of Rotherhithe London Overground station as they approach the southern portal, a small but telling reminder of how thoroughly this Edwardian crossing was threaded through an already-dense industrial riverside. The Grade II listed portals and shaft buildings stand much as they were listed in 1983, even as the tunnel itself continues to carry thousands of daily vehicle movements under TfL's stewardship.
